We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Verification Engineer, to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station.

Job Purpose:

Verification Engineers fulfil a key role in Rolls-Royce SMR's Systems Engineering approach to design, by leading the process of verifying that our power station design meets all its requirements. This is a part of our strategy to offer a delivery-certain solution, by using every modern engineering tool possible (analysis, rig test, etc.) to prove the design will meet its requirements before starting manufacture and construction.

For this area they will initially be responsible for developing the Verification Strategy, which sets out the activities that will be conducted, and the evidence that will need to produced to prove the design.

In the Civils and Build Certainty Verification team, our key focus is on verifying the unique modular designs and layout of our structures and systems to ensure we deliver a build certain product; a step change for the nuclear power industry.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

Defining and managing the Verification Strategy for part of the power station, using own knowledge and bringing together the expertise that exists across the wider engineering team.

Applying technical know-how to act as an Intelligent Customer when discussing methods of verification, and design for verification with design teams and vendors.

Understanding the expectations of the relevant regulatory bodies for verification evidence, and taking this into account when defining the Verification Strategy.

Defining the objectives/requirements for verification activities within the strategy (e.g., rig tests, analyses), and agreeing those with the parties responsible for executing them.

Leading test activities that provide verification evidence, e.g., translating test objectives into test requirements, and then directing the test using the associated test schedule. For simpler tests conducted entirely in the supply chain, leading the whole test programme from start to finish.

Reviewing/auditing verification activities conducted both internally and externally in the supply chain, to ensure they are being conducted to the required standards of quality.

Collating verification evidence as it is produced and using it to assess design compliance to requirements.

The Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Verification and Validation Experience

Experience in verification, validation, commissioning or equipment qualification for complex new products, ideally in a safety critical and highly regulated industry.

This experience could have included setting out the strategy/plan, conducting activities such as analysis, test, etc., or reviewing/auditing evidence from said activities to assess the product's compliance to its requirements.

  1. Domain Knowledge

Knowledge and experience in one or more of the many engineering disciplines involved in the design, assembly and construction of a nuclear power station or equivalent complex product.

For this role within the Civils and Build Certainty team, domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas is required: civil/structural engineering, mechanical engineering (of complex or modular installations), design for assembly/construction/layout, mechanical handling and seismic qualification.

  1. Proactive approach to challenging the status quo

Verification Engineers shall be prepared to challenge conventional thinking, including proactively searching for best practice from across the globe and working to embed it within the business.

For this role, bringing together approach from different industries (e.g., civil and mechanical) is critical to delivering the whole, integrated power station design.

  1. Communication & influencing skills

The Verification Engineer shall have strong interpersonal and communication skills to bring people together to solve problems as a multi-disciplinary team.

They shall be able to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely both internally and sometimes externally to Rolls-Royce SMR.

This includes the ability to express the importance of early thinking about verification, and to build credibility and support to the strategic approach that Rolls-Royce SMR is taking to it.

  1. Managing Work

The Verification Engineer shall be able to effectively manage their workload, balancing priorities and dealing with ambiguity to deliver tasks that align with the business needs.

As Verification Engineers work cross disciplines, being able to engage and understand what needs to be delivered as well as influence the Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) - cross-business multi-disciplinary teams - to ensure verification needs are met is essential.

Qualifications & Training:

  • Degree-level or equivalent qualifications in either civil, structural or mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional recognition through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards it, for e.g., ICE, IStructE, IMechE.

Desirable:

  • For candidates with civil/structural experience, design experience of steel and concrete structures such as buildings, retaining walls, foundations, pools or similar, working to British Standards, Eurocodes and American standards (such as ACI, ASCE and ANSI) and working with modular structures in steel and pre-cast concrete.
  • For candidates with mechanical experience, experience with modular design assemblies with high levels of integration with other disciplines, e.g. products with integrated mechanical, structural and EC&I elements.
  • Experience of working in the nuclear industry including design of seismically-qualified structures and those subjected to extreme external and internal hazards.

Pay and Benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £40,000-£55,000 plus:-

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance - £2200, enabling you to create a bespoke package
